Biography & Qualifications

Mu’aawiyah Tucker

He was raised a devout Christian in London until he accepted Islam in his second year at college at the age of 17. From the very beginning he was very enthusiastic to learn about Islam and the Arabic language.  He used to attend Islamic lectures and conferences regularly, and was active in learning Arabic and how to read the Qur'aan properly.  He attended a Tajweed class in Masjid ibn Taymiyyah for a while after accepting Islam.

A year after accepting Islaam, when a group of teachers from the Islamic University of Madeenah came to Glasgow, UK, he travelled to scotland to apply to the University.  After spending two weeks with them, they eventually accepted him to attend the following year, 2001.

He successfully completed 3 years in an Arabic language program at Madeenah University, Saudi Arabia with `Excellence`. He completed the Arabic program which consisted of various subjects related to Arabic, and also other supplementary subjects like Islamic Creed, history, Qur'aan tafseer, Hadeeth, Fiqh, and more.  Throughout those years he attended Qur'an memorisation programs outside the University as part of his extracurricular activities.  During those early years in the Arabic program, he studied and memorised the Arabic book in grammar called al-Aajuroomiyyah.  He completed the explanation of it by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al Uthaimeen, and Muhammad Muhyiddeen Abdul-Hameed.  He then went onto study the book in the Prophets Mosque with Shaykh Uhaid ash-Shinqeetee.

He then went on to study in the Islamic University in the faculty of Islamic law.  During those years he furthered his studies with the Arabic language with studying it in the University with the famous book 'Alfiyyah ibn Maalik', and also outside the University with 'Qatr an-Nadaa' in the Prophets Mosque with shaykh Uhaid ash-Shinqeetee, and 'Laamiyyatul Af'aal' with shaykh Abdur-Raheem al-Qaawishee (as seen in the adjacent video).  He also read extensively in the Arabic language and collected many books related to Arabic grammar, morphology, literature, poetry and various dictionaries, (all of which are currently accessible in our public Islamic library).

After studying Arabic extensively, he also had experience teaching the books he had studied, as mentioned in more detail in the history of Arabic Courses.

In the years he studied in the faculty of Islamic law, he studied a variety of subjects, from the Islamic belief, Tafseer of Qur'aan and its sciences, Hadeeth and its sciences, history etc, to the main focus of the degree, which was Islamic law, how to derive that law, how to implement it on a national scale, politically, economically and socially.  This meant extensive study of Islamic law covering all the four math.habs, and how they derive their rulings.  This also covered the judiciary, how to implement Islam in court, Islamic politics, economy, and how to establish Islam on a national scale in ruling a country.

He has also studied other books and subjects outside of University hours in Usool al-Fiqh, Usool al-Tafseer, Takhreej of Hadeeth, arabic morphology, and logic. In Usool al-Fiqh he completed a book called 'miftaahul Wusool' by a maaliki scholar with a Dr. Abdul-Lateef al-Hamad (Phd in Usool al Fiqh). This book was authored with the intent of connecting usool al fiqh to Fiqh by expressing the ways in which different opinions in usool al fiqh brings about differences in fiqh. Many aspects of these differences come back to the Arabic language and thus giving the one who studies this subject a better ability at explaining the Arabic language.

In Usool al-Tafseer he completed a book called Fusool fee Usool at-Tafseer by one of the leading scholars in Saudi Arabia in the science of tafseer. He studied this book with Dr. Abdullah al-Awaaji, a researcher and lecturer at Madeenah University. Because the Quraan was revealed in the Arabic language, a major part of tafseer depends upon the Arabic language, and therefore giving the one who studies the usool of tafseer an extra edge in teaching the Arabic language and in relating it to Islaam.

Once he graduated from the Islamic University of Madeenah with 'Excellent', he returned to the UK to begin teaching on a full time bases.  Since returning he has given many lectures in various Universities, such as Queen Mary University, and also many other Islamic institutes and organisations such as Croydon ICT.  Some of those lectures are available now on our YouTube channel.

All of his efforts in establishing Arabic Courses can be found in our 'History of Arabic Courses' pages.

He has experience in teaching Arabic at all levels, and endeavours to give the student in future years all the tools needed to fully appreciate Islaam and the Quraan.
