While I was in Madeenah the other day, I tried my best to follow at least one Janaazah, and the best time to do so is the fajr one. The air is cool and crisp, and by the time you've finished, the sun is just about to raise. Straight after we perform the prayer, people rush to carry the bodies, even if it was for a second. Even if it was to just touch the wooden bed, in order to achieve the reward of carrying the body to its final resting place.
The people scurry along, changing hands, passing the wooden bed from one person to another. Doing what they can to both share the reward and fulfilling the task that Allaah has laid upon them. Constantly you hear the people saying 'Innaa lillaahi wa innaa ilaihi raaji'oon', which means "To Allaah we belong, and to him we will return". This is the reality of life.
When we arrive at the grave, a few take the body, all rapped in white cloth, and place it in the grave. A big hole in the ground with space in the side. One by one, the bricks are placed in front of the body, sealing this once alive person in the grave forever until the day when we are brought back. Everyone takes part, carrying the bricks, remembering Allaah and remembering death.
Once complete, everyone takes part in at least filling the grave with one handful of dirt. Reminding themselves that one day, others will do the same to them. Once full, a moment of silence, as we all remind ourselves of what we have just done, and how that same thing will happen to us. Making du'aa to Allaah, asking Allaah for mercy for the dead, mercy for ourselves and to not make us from those whose hearts have become hard.
Following the Janaazah is a must, and whoever does not do so, has truely missed out.
