What is the difference between لي and عندي when attributing something or someone to someone else?
What is the difference between لي and عندي when attributing something or someone to someone else?
Basically, as it relates to 'possession', one would use لي to denote that someone has a certain 'relative', or 'person'. i.e. 'لي أخ واحد' (which means 'I HAVE one brother) in which one would NEVER say 'عندي أخ واحد'.
One would use 'عندي' when talking about 'things' or inanimate objects. So one would say 'عندي قلم واحد' (I HAVE one pen).
One may get confused between the use of 'هذا القلم لي' and something like 'السيارة لحامدٍ' in which the 'ل' was used for a 'thing', and also with the sentence 'محمد عند المدير' or 'طلحة عندي', but those two are two different uses.
The first sentence is saying 'This pen belongs to me' and not saying 'I have a pen', which is what the initial discussion was about. Similarly, the second sentence mean 'Muhammad is with the head master' and 'Talhah is with me', and not saying 'Muhammad HAS a head master' and 'I HAVE talhah', as in the initial meaning mentioned at the beginning.
